When do Machu Picchu tickets open (and how far ahead to book)
There’s no single “opening day” for Machu Picchu: tickets are released by Peru’s Ministry of Culture on a rolling calendar. What matters is how far ahead you buy, because the scarce parts book out long before general entry does. On 16 October 2026 we found no announcement of a 2027 release on the official pages; the 2026 sale gives the best precedent, set out below.
How the rolling release works
Timed-entry tickets are available months in advance and stay on sale until each hourly slot fills. Because there’s no lottery, the game is simply buying before your preferred slot is gone.
The mountain add-ons, Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu Mountain, sit on the same calendar but have far smaller caps, so they’re the first to disappear.

What the official pages say right now
The Ministry of Culture’s Machu Picchu site says that since 1 June 2024 there are three circuits grouping 10 routes, under Ministerial Resolution 528-2023-MC. Circuit 1 is Panoramic, Circuit 2 is Classic and Circuit 3 is Royal. The Machu Picchu Mountain route is 1-A in Circuit 1, and the Huayna Picchu mountain route is 3-A in Circuit 3. Some routes are marked as high season only.
The sale for 2026 opened publicly at the Cusco culture office (DDC Cusco) on 17 November 2025, with travel agencies and tour operators making the first reservations. It started with dates in January 2026, at 8:00 a.m. for the Inca Trail and at 12:00 noon for Machu Picchu. That is a precedent, not a promise. On 16 October 2026 neither the DDC Cusco site nor machupicchu.gob.pe showed a 2027 release date; the most recent ticket-related notice on the DDC Cusco site, dated 15 October 2026, concerns discounts for school groups, which must be requested 60 business days in advance. The official sale platform is tuboleto.cultura.pe.
How far ahead to book
This is our planning guidance, not an official figure: for June through August, buy 4–6 weeks ahead for morning slots and mountain add-ons. For the shoulder months, 1–2 weeks is usually comfortable. Off-season, you can often buy a few days out.
If your ideal date shows sold out, watch for same-day resale as no-shows are released, and consider a later entry hour, which clears as morning demand passes.

Always start at the Ministry of Culture ticket site or a licensed agency for groups. Resellers add a markup for the same slot, and only the official record is checked against your passport at the gate.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a Machu Picchu lottery?
No. Machu Picchu uses timed-entry tickets sold on a rolling basis, not a lottery. The Inca Trail trek, by contrast, uses a fixed quota.
When do Machu Picchu tickets for 2027 go on sale?
No date was published on the official pages we read on 16 October 2026. The 2026 sale opened on 17 November 2025 with January 2026 dates. Check tuboleto.cultura.pe and the DDC Cusco news page.
What time slot should I pick?
The 7:00–8:00 AM slots have the best light and thinnest crowds, which is exactly why they sell out first.
