Overview
The Acropolis introduced hourly timed entry with a daily visitor cap to stop the Propylaea bottleneck from becoming genuinely unsafe. You now book a specific hour, and each hour has its own allocation — the first slots of the day are the largest and the first to fill.
Buy from the official Hellenic Heritage ticket service. Standard adult entry runs around €20 in high season, with a combined ticket covering the Ancient Agora, Kerameikos and other sites. The timed slot only controls when you enter; once inside, you can stay as long as you like within opening hours.
How the permit works
- 1Book on the official ticket site and pick a date plus an entry hour.
- 2Choose single-site entry or the combined Athens archaeological ticket.
- 3Enter within your booked hour at the main (west) or Theatre of Dionysus (south) gate.
- 4Named tickets are checked against ID — book with the traveller’s real name.
- 5In July and August, check for afternoon heat closures before you commit to a midday slot.

- The 8:00 slot is worth the alarm: cool stone, low sun on the Parthenon columns, and a fraction of the people.
- The marble is polished slippery by millions of feet — grippy shoes matter more than you’d expect.
- On extreme-heat days the site closes for several midday hours. If that hits your slot, keep the ticket and ask about re-entry rules on site.
