Vatican Museums tickets: is the €5 online booking worth it?

The Vatican Museums’ own tariff page lists the full ticket at €20 without online booking, and at €20 plus €5 with “Skip the line” booking on the official site. That €5 is the real question behind “is it worth buying a timed ticket?”. The page says nothing about entry times or daily limits, so this guide sticks to what is written there, read on 16 October 2026.

What the tariff page says

The full ticket costs €20 without online booking, and €20 plus €5 with “Skip the line” booking on the official Vatican Museums site. The reduced ticket is €10, or €10 plus €5 with booking; students, pilgrimages and university institutes pay the same €10 (plus €5 with booking), and school and seminary tickets are €5 (plus €2).

The page states that the ticket gives access to the Museums and the Sistine Chapel only on the day it is issued, and that tickets are not refundable. It also states that the only official site for online tickets is tickets.museivaticani.va and warns about sites with similar domains, which may charge considerably higher prices.

Missed the window? Book a guided visit with entry included

A guided visit is a separate booking: the guide and the entrance come together, for a fixed time. It is worth checking when the official calendar has nothing left for your date.

Is the €5 worth it?

On the page, online booking is an add-on to the €20 ticket: you pay €5 more for what it calls “Salta la fila”, skip the line. The page does not say how long the queue is, at what hours it is shortest or how many tickets exist, so no official source can put the value of that €5 in minutes. What it does say is that the ticket is valid only on the day it is issued and is not refundable, so a booking is a commitment to one day.

The practical test follows from that. If your day in Rome is fixed, such as a short stay, a cruise stop or a tour, €5 on top of €20 buys certainty on that day. If you could go on any of several days, you are not forced to book ahead: the page lists a €20 price “without online booking”. It does not say where that ticket is sold, so confirm the on-site option with the museum before you rely on it.

Days, hours and free entry

The page lists Monday to Saturday 8:00–20:00, last entry 18:00, and the last Sunday of each month 9:00–14:00, last entry 12:30, with free admission. Guided visits on that Sunday require a booking. Free entry also applies to children under 7, visitors with a certified disability of at least 67% and ICOM or ICOMOS card holders, among others listed on the page; free tickets for visitors with disabilities cannot be booked online and are issued at the “Permessi Speciali” or “Welcome Desk” counters in the entrance hall.
