Overview
Phantom Ranch is the only lodging at the bottom of the Grand Canyon — a cluster of stone cabins and dormitories beside Bright Angel Creek, built in 1922. There is no road. Everyone arrives on foot, by mule, or off a river trip.
Beds are awarded by a monthly lottery run by the park’s concessioner, drawing roughly 15 months ahead of the stay. You enter for a target month, and if you’re drawn you’re offered specific dates — dorm bunk or cabin — along with the option to book the canteen’s stew and breakfast seatings, which are the only meals available down there.

- March–May and September–November are the safe windows; summer inner-canyon heat regularly exceeds 100°F / 38°C and causes rescues.
- A dorm bunk is drawn far more often than a cabin — ask for either if you just want to be down there.
