Overview
Phantom Ranch is the only lodging at the bottom of the Grand Canyon — a cluster of stone cabins and dormitories beside Bright Angel Creek, built in 1922. There is no road. Everyone arrives on foot, by mule, or off a river trip.
Beds are awarded by a monthly lottery run by the park’s lodging concessioner: you enter between the 1st and the 25th of the 15th month before your stay month, and winners hear by the end of the following month. Dinner and breakfast are booked ahead too, and meals are offered to lottery winners first.

How the permit works
- 1Enter between the 1st and the 25th of the month that falls 15 months before your target month.
- 2If drawn, you get specific dates and a dormitory bunk or a cabin: in 2026 a dorm bed is US$90 (US$100 in 2027) and a cabin for two US$226.39.
- 3Book canteen meal seatings at the same time — there’s no other food source at the ranch.
- 4Arrange your own way down: Bright Angel or South Kaibab on foot, a mule trip, or a river trip.
- 5Missed the lottery? Unsold beds and all meals go on general sale on the 1st of each month at 12:01 AM MT online.

- A realistic hiking plan — the rim-to-river descent and climb out are the actual barrier
Insider tips
- March–May and September–November are the safe windows; summer inner-canyon heat regularly exceeds 100°F / 38°C and causes rescues.
- Hikers can book up to 9 people and 4 nights per reservation; mule trips spend 1 night (April–October) or 2 (November–March).
- If the lottery fails, a Bright Angel Campground backcountry permit puts you in the same spot for a fraction of the cost.
