The Havasu Falls permit release: how the February drop works
Havasu Falls is not a national park permit and it does not behave like one. The turquoise waterfalls sit on Havasupai tribal land, below the rim of the Grand Canyon, and the tribe controls access on its own terms through its own reservation site. That means one annual release, a minimum stay, no day visits, and rules that are enforced rather than negotiated. Understanding the shape of it before February is the difference between a trip and a wasted morning.
One annual release, in February
In 2026 the regular sale opened on February 1 at 8:00 a.m. Arizona time on the official Havasupai reservations site; the 2027 date has not been announced. There is no lottery: the whole season goes on sale at once. Create and verify your account well before the date, log in early, and know which date ranges you would accept.
Because everything goes on sale at once, the calendar you see on release day is the whole year. Don’t count on a second market later: the official FAQ says resale or transfer of reservations is strictly prohibited, so a reservation bought from someone else is not a way in.
What the official site says on 16 October 2026
The Havasupai reservations home page and its FAQ list prices for 2026 only: US$455 per person for the campground and US$2,277 for a lodge room (up to four people), both for 3 nights, and US$400 round trip per pack mule. They give no 2027 sale date, time or price. The latest dated notice on the home page, from 31 August 2026, says only that Havasupai is open and the trails are passable.
The FAQ also states that every booking is 4 days and 3 nights; that campground bookings can include up to 12 permits; that children 6 and under are free with a valid permit holder, while children 7 and older need a paid permit; and that a booking is valid only if the purchaser, the trip leader or one of two named alternates is present with photo ID. The reservation is dry: no drugs or alcohol. Cancelling by email at least 90 days before the permit start date refunds 50% of the permit fee; inside 90 days nothing is refundable.
Three nights minimum, and no day hiking
There is no day-hike option to Havasu Falls. Not a hard one, not an early-start one: visiting without an overnight reservation is not permitted, and the tribe turns people back. Campground reservations are sold as a fixed multi-night stay, normally three nights and four days, so you cannot buy a single night to shorten the trip. The alternative is the small lodge in Supai village, which is booked separately and has its own limited capacity.
It is 8 miles from Hualapai Hilltop down to Supai village and 2 more to the campground, with the full climb back out at the end, in a canyon that gets genuinely dangerous in summer heat. Plan for full desert self-sufficiency: water treatment, no reliable phone signal, and the physical reality of carrying a pack out on the last day. Mule service exists (US$400 round trip in 2026) but is not something to build a schedule around.
The real cost, and legitimate alternatives
For 2026 the campground costs US$455 per person for the 4-day, 3-night stay, with permits, fees and taxes included; a lodge room costs US$2,277 for up to 4 people. The 2027 price is not published yet. Cancellation rules are strict: 50% back if you cancel 90 days or more ahead, nothing inside 90 days.
If February passes you by, consider the honest substitutes. Phantom Ranch, at the bottom of the Grand Canyon, runs its own monthly lottery 15 months ahead and delivers the same below-the-rim experience by a different door. Grand Canyon backcountry permits open a route to Bright Angel and Cottonwood campgrounds. And nothing anywhere replicates Havasu’s travertine pools, so treat next February as the plan rather than hunting for a shortcut this year.
