Overview
To enter the Palace of Versailles every visitor must book a time slot, and the Palace states that admission within half an hour of the booked slot can only be guaranteed for tickets bought online. Only the Palace needs a slot: the gardens, the park and the Trianon estate are visited freely during the day.
Missed the window? Book a guided visit with entry included
A guided visit is a separate booking: the guide and the entrance come together, for a fixed time. It is worth checking when the official calendar has nothing left for your date.

The Passport ticket, which covers the whole estate with timed entry to the Palace, costs €35. Free admission, for under-18s and for under-26s living in the EU, still requires a booked slot, and Paris Museum Pass holders have to obtain a free Passport ticket. Tickets are non-refundable and non-exchangeable. The official site does not say how far ahead slots are released. When the slots for your day are gone, a guided visit that includes the Palace entry is the alternative.
